What Kind of Belonging Requires Silence as Its Price?

The culture of silence follows me. It reminds me that the life I have built in South Africa may depend partly on my willingness to remain quiet about the xenophobia that shapes it. South Africa has given me friendships, work and a life I value, yet I believe my nationality has quietly closed professional doors that my qualifications should have opened. Where I live and work insulated me from the recent xenophobia experienced by other African nationals, whose experiences I cannot claim as my own, but their treatment reminds me how conditional my own place may be. If naming xenophobia may cost a foreign national a livelihood, while silence allows exclusion to persist, what kind of belonging requires silence as its price?
